Abstract

575,472. Cultivating moulds. GAVRONSKY, J. O. March 21, 1944, No. 5282. [Class 14 (ii)] An apparatus for obtaining continuously the products of metabolism of moulds, for example, penicillin, comprises a culture vessel 1, preferably made of aluminium, fitted with a series of shallow containers 17 connected together by tubes 18, means 10 to supply nutrient medium, one or more openings 7 to enable sterilized air or oxygen to be passed through the vessel, and a draw off cock 4 at the bottom for the removal of liquid containing the metabolic solution produced. The top of each tube is less than 2.5 cms. above the floor of the container and the preferably flanged bottom of the tube is at such a height above the next lower container, preferably 0.5-0.7 cms., that the nutrient medium emerging from the tube is allowed to mix freely with the liquid in the container underneath the mycelium. Openings may be provided at different levels for admitting superheated steam for sterilization. The Provisional Specification describes also a sampling tube set up at an acute angle at the side. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 574,649.
