Abstract

575,264. Waterproofing felt; agglutinated fibrous materials. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., ROGERSON, J., and WARREN, F. W. Nov. 13, 1943, No. 18933. [Class 140] Felt is made abrasion resistant and waterproof by impregnating it with an aqueous dispersion of a mixture of a partly polymerised vinyl resin and a plasticiser, pressing to remove excess dispersion, and heating to cause the mixture to gel and the resin to undergo further polymerisation. Impregnation may be assisted by vacuum or the addition of wetting agents to the dispersion. The resin may be partly polymerised methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride-acetate, or vinyl butyrate, and the plasticiser may be dibutyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate. It may be dispersed in water with the aid of soap or casein. The products may be loose and felt-like, or leather-like and sultable for shoe soles.
