[Class 53] The top closure 11 of the outer zinc container 13 forming the negative electrode of a dry cell, is formed on the carbon 9, which, together with the depolarizing mass 12 is suspended by the closure within the container, the closure being permanently secured to the container. The container is provided with a shoulder 15 at its neck for supporting the closure, which may be sealed by cement at 16 and locked in position by inturning the edges 17 of the container. A jellified electrolyte is employed which partly fills the space between the container and the depolarizing mass, leaving a space 19 for accumulation of gas, the closure being so firm that it withstands considerable pressure. If the electrolyte is jellified with the cell inverted, the gas space is provided at the bottom of the cell and if an enlarged gas space is required the body 12 may be grooved. The closure member 11 may be formed of a suitable thermo-plastic material and moulded about the carbon after the cap 10 has been placed thereon. Specification 531,237 is referred to.
