Abstract
574,862. Welding. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd. March 12, 1945, No. 6094. Convention date, March 11, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] A water-cooled, tubular resistance, welding electrode holder 10 carried by an arm 13 of the welding machine and provided with an electrode 22 having a recess 24 for the circulation of cooling fluid supplied by an inlet tube 21 entering the recess, has means at the discharge end of the inlet tube for increasing the velocity of flow within the recess to increase the amount of heat withdrawn from the electrode. For this purpose, the discharge end of the tube 21 is formed with a portion of greatly reduced diameter in the form of a constricted throat 26. This may be followed by a slightly divergent outlet nozzle 27 provided with rounded or bead-shaped edges to avoid resistance to flow and to preclude the possibility of the fluid breaking away from the confining walls at high speed. The hose attachment member 15 in which the tube 21 is screwed and which has integral nipples 18, 19, is attached to the holder by a nut 17. In a modification, the tube 21 is formed with a thickened terminal portion 30 shaped to define a contracting conical entrance channel 31 of about 21 degrees, a constricted throat section 32 and an annular expanding conical outlet channel 33 of about 5 to 7 degrees located between the corresponding outer surface of the inlet tube and the inner surface of the recess 24. In addition to rounding at 34 the end of the inlet tube to facilitate reversal of the liquid flow without producing turbulence, eddy currents, &c., the end of the recess is formed with heart-shaped rotation surfaces 35 to provide an inward projection 36 widening from the top to the bottom and merging into the side walls of the recess to constrain the fluid to flow outwardly in all directions radial to the axis and then backwardly in the recess about such tube. The electrode may be used particularly in welding aluminium, magnesium and zinc and also tin- and zinc-coated steels and terne plate and copper alloys.
