742,742. Refining metals and alloys; iron and steel. HUTTENWERK OBERHAUSEN AKT.-GES. June 12, 1953 [June 13, 1952], No. 16243/53. Classes 72 and 82(1). A method of refining metals and alloys, particularly steel or pig iron, consists in introducing a refining blast beneath the surface of a bath of the molten metal through a cooling nozzle having an immersed portion extending at a large angle to the vertical and a cooling jacket which is subdivided into two concentric annular chambers by a heat insulating wall extending up to or nearly up to the mouth of the nozzle with inlet and outlet for a cooling agent. As shown, the nozzle has a long, straight, vertical body portion and a front portion, for immersion in the metal, at a large angle to the body portion. A cooling chamber between walls 1 and 3 is divided into two concentric chambers by double walled pipe 2 the space between the walls being filled with a layer of insulating material such as a layer of asbestos or a wire spiral. The outer chamber has ribs 4, Fig. 2, to increase the heat transfer surface of wall 1. The upper end of the nozzle is provided with inlet 12 and outlet 14 for a cooling fluid connected respectively to the inner and outer parts of the cooling chamber.
