Abstract
574,799. Casting-machines. ENFIELD ROLLING MILLS, Ltd., and METZGER, O.J.. Sept. 8, 1942, No. 12674. [Class 83 (i)] A billet is formed by applying a cooled body 6 through the upper surface 2 of molten aluminium alloy or other metal and then progressively displacing the body as the metal freezes relative to a non-metallic refractory tubular mould 3, fresh metal being supplied, e.g. by a passage 4. Metal is prevented from depositing on the sides of the body 6 by insulating material. A tapered cavity 20 may be provided to ensure that the deposit moves up with the body 6 and a spring-closed clamp 12, Fig. 2, may be released by raising a camlever 18 to give additional support. Air may also be projected on to the exposed part of the deposit 16 from slots 21 of a U-shaped duct 22. In a modification, the mould walls 24, Fig. 4, defining the shape of the deposit, are attached to the cooled body 6 and move therewith. Vents 28 are provided, also insulators 32, 33 and 34, to prevent metal from depositing on the stirrup 31 &c. and sleeves 26, 27 for supporting the wall 24. The movement of the cooling body 6 is preferably slightly slower than the speed of freezing. To produce a fine grain structure, the body 6 or the molten metal may be vibrated, e.g. by an electromagnetic vibrator 29. The parts 3, 24 may be made of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Durex." Specification 573,433 is referred to.
