Abstract

574,643. Carburetters. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Feb. 9, 1942, No. 1706. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1940. [Class 7 (iii)] In order to control the fuel supply in accordance with the density of the intake air, a sample of this air is drawn by a pump 62, Fig. 2, -through a restricted orifice 72 in a byepass 66, 76 on the intake pipe 18, and the pressures at opposite sides of the orifice 72 are conveyed by pipes 30, 32 to the opposite sides of a diaphragm 38, Fig. 1, adjusting the position of the rotor casing 49 of a variable. displacement fuel pump 50 supplying fuel to an injection nozzle 26. The area of the orifice 72 is varied in accordance with engine speed by a governor 82 adjusting a spring-pressed plug 78 in the orifice. The contour of the plug may be designed to compensate for changes in the volumetric efficiency of the engine, and also to enrich the mixture at higher powers. A restriction 98 may be provided in the pipe 32, and hand control of the fuel may be obtained by a valve 96 adapted to connect the two sides of the diaphragm 38. The pressure head across the orifice 72 may be indicated at 100. The density detecting device may be as described in Specification 549,957, [Group XX].
