[Class 87 (ii)] [Also,in Group VI] A machine for applying a layer of plastic material to an article., as in the application of a layer of cream to biscuits, comprises means whereby the plastic material is taken up within the confines of a stencil plate and the wad thus formed ejected by fluid pressure The hollow cylinder 1 with stencil openings 2 spaced around the periphery is fed with plastic material 3 which is forced into the openings 2 by gravity and forms wads within the openings by removal of the surplus material by stationary exterior and interior scrapers 4, 8 acting in conjunction - with the rotary hollow cylinder 1. The scraper 8 may be adjustable and formed integral with the air nozzle 9. The exterior scraper 4 is pivoted at 15 and acted upon by a set-screw 7 to obtain maximum pressure of the stepped edge 6 of the arrow head 5 of the scraper 4 against the cylinder 1. To avoid rolling up of the wad against the back edge of the stencil opening 2 an abutment 20 is mounted on the nozzle 9 and scraper 8 to form a compression pocket 11. The wads of plastic material 3 are forced from the stencil by constant air pressure from the nozzle 9 or by intermittent waves of air pressure synchronized with the rotation of the cylinder and the passage of biscuits 13 on the conveyer 14 beneath the cylinder. The ejecting air may be of variable temperature. The stencil may take the form of an oscillating flat plate, a rotatable disc or a shallow cone.
