Abstract

574,103. Internal expanding brakes. KIRKSTALL FORGE, Ltd., and COWELL, F. R. Jan. 1, 1944, No. 11. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] The brake shoes are each retracted by a leaf spring 15 which abuts at its ends on pins 16, 17 on the shoe and, at its centre, on a pin 18 mounted on the brake bracket 28 and the pin 17 is removable to permit the spring, when unflexed, to be withdrawn endwise through an opening in the shoe. The spring 15 is formed with a depression 20 to engage a reduced part of the pin 17 which is thereby locked against accidental withdrawal. The end of the spring is turned up at 21 and a hole is drilled at 22 to receive a bar 23 for flexing the spring to permit removal or insertion of the pin 17. In a modification, the pin 17 is non-adjustable, the spring being flexed by a revoluble cam member on the pin 18. Two diametrically opposed expanders 14 may be used.
