Abstract

A carboxylic ester of an a : b -unsaturated alcohol, other than vinyl acetate, is reacted with hydrogencyanide in the presence of an alkaline catalyst such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate, borate, cyanide, phosphate, acetate, stearate, tartrate or alkoxide. The reaction is also facilitated by the presence of a small amount of an aldehyde or ketone. In examples, liquid hydrogen cyanide is reacted with vinyl formate, b -amylvinylacetate and D - 1 - cyclohexenylacetate. With solid unsaturated esters, solvents may be used. The reaction may be effected in the gaseous state. Unsaturated esters of propionic, butyric, lauric, oleic, stearic, benzoic, furoic, oxalic, malonic, succinic and adipic acids are mentioned. By using the product as a diluent and feeding in hydrogencyanide and ester, the process may be made to run continuously.
