573,472. Fireproofing fibrous materials. JORDAN, L. A., and O'NEILL, L. A. March 11, 1943, No. 3991. [Class 140] Organic fibrous materials such as fibres, fabrics, and wood, are rendered fire- and smoulder-resistant over the whole or part of their depth by incorporating therein by precipitation iron or tin oxide or both, and also, in a separate operation, either by precipitation or in conjunction with a vehicle, water-insoluble antimony or arsenic oxides or sulphides, which may comprise 5-25 per cent. of the weight of the material treated. Thus, hessian fabric may be impregnated with 5-6 per cent. of iron oxide as by padding successively with solutions of ferric sulphate and sodium carbonate, and then treated with a dispersion of 18 parts by weight of antimony tri-oxide in 48 parts of 12 per cent. casein solution, the material being thereafter dried and treated as with formaldehyde solution to insolubilize the casein and so render the material also weather-resistant. Other vehicles referred to are linseed oil, nitrocellulose, glue and urea formaldehyde.
