Abstract

573,387. Turbidometers. VVATSON & SONS, Ltd., W., FOX, F. K., and REYERSBACH, C. Oct. 18, 1943, No. 17128. [Class 97 (iii)] In order that the concentration and particle size of solid particles suspended in gases may be measured or tested a sealed vacuum flask or capsule of known volumetric capacity is provided, the construction being such that the seal may be broken to admit the particle-laden gas and to direct it in a jetlike stream against an interior surface of the flask arranged to constitute a greasy or adherent surface. As shown, the vacuum capsule comprises a wall 5 of the shape shown, a transparent wall plate 6 welded thereto and a stem 10 having a capilliary bore 13 sealed at the outer extremity. A weakening groove 14 is provided. In operation the upper part of the stem 10 is broken off at the groove 14 whereupon the laden gas rushes into the capsule and impinges on the greasy surface of the wall 6. The particle deposit on the interior of the wall 6 may be examined from the outside, using a microscope in the usual way.
