Abstract

<PICT:0465973/III/1> In determining the density of a gas by measuring the change in pressure of a body of standard gas into which the unknown gas diffuses through a diaphragm, the gas under test is passed over the diaphragm at a speed sufficient to prevent a material change in its composition owing to the diffusion. The minimum speed is such that the contents of the diffusion chamber are changed 300 times per minute. The volume of standard gas should not exceed 4 cubic inches of volume per square inch of diaphragm area, but it should be sufficiently large to operate the pressure gauge without being thereby changed by more than 20 per cent. In the apparatus shown, the gas to be tested flows radially over the diaphragm 8 from the inlet 18 to the outlet 17, and the standard gas is enclosed in the space 9 which communicates by the passage 19 with a pressure gauge (not shown). Another modification has a diaphragm on each side of space 9. The diaphragm is preferably composed of compressed nickel powder as described in Specification 452,764.
