Abstract

539,347. Specific gravity apparatus. BROSCOMB, D. G. July 15, 1940, Nos. 11692/40 and 8896/41. [Class 97 (iii)] In apparatus in which the density of a gas is measured by the buoyancy of a light body in an atmosphere of the gas whose density is to be determined the light body comprises a flexible hermetically sealed body 1 filled to such an extent with a gas that it is capable of expanding and contracting according to the variations of temperature and pressure between the maximum and minimum value likely to occur under the conditions of use. The body 1 of flexible metal, rubber &c. is hung from a beam 2 counterweighted at 7 and provided with a counterweighted pointer 9 moving over a scale 11 or arranged by, say magnetic coupling, to record on a moving strip. The balance and body 1 are contained in a chamber 4 having an inlet 12 and outlet 13 for the gas under test. In comparing the densities of two gases similar bodies 1, 17, Fig. 3, are hung on a balance arm 2 in separate chambers 14, 15 each having an inlet 18 and an outlet 19.
