Abstract

573,027. Piers &c. BAKER, A. L. L. July 22, 1943, No. 11954. [Class 68 (ii)] A pier, constructed away from and then towed to the site, comprises tubular pillars 1 interconnected by pivoted links 11 so that the unit comprises a parallelogram which can be folded as in Fig. 1 for towing or expanded as in Fig. 3 for erection with the pillars vertical and the links either level or somewhat inclined according to the depth of the sea bed. The pillars may have telescopic heads so that the pier deck may be made horizontal. The upper links form platforms for supporting winches for winding or paying out wire cables 33 anchored, as shown for operating the parallelogram. Additional cross-ties may be provided. The feet of the pillars are universally jointed to the base of the pillars, which are provided with fenders 26 which may be constructed and supported as described in Specification 563,946, [Group XXXIII]. For towing purposes the tubular pillars, fenders and links may be filled with air which is subsequently expelled by the admission of water or ballast to sink the structure, valves and headers for controlling the admission and expulsion of the air, water, &c. being provided.
