572,951. Card indexes. MATHIESEN, N. P. June 3, 1941, No. 7039. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1939. [Class 146 (i)] Magnetic means are employed for effecting spreading of the cards of a card index by mutual repulsion, in order to render their surfaces visible. Separating-sheets of magnetized material may be inserted between the cards, or they may have attached to them strips 2, Fig. 1, of magnetic material, which are acted upon by permanent magnets 3, Fig. 5, disposed at the sides of the series of cards. The spreading may be aided by manual action or by mechanical means. The permanent magnets may be fixed in relation to the drawer or tray containing the cards, so that movement of the cards occurs during-the withdrawal or pushing in of the drawer. The movement of the cards may be brought about by modification of the magnetic field effected by a sliding member acting as a magnetic shunt.
