Abstract

572,724. Propelling aircraft. HALFORD, F. B., and MOULT, E. S. Nov. 10, 1939, No. 29816. [Class 4] A blower G driven by an internal-combustion engine working on the two-stroke cycle delivers scavenging air to the manifold G<1>. The mixed exhaust gases and scavenging air are discharged through rearwardly-extending nozzles E<1> so as to produce a reactive effect assisting in the propulsion of the aircraft. The size of the nozzles may be adjusted so as to vary the back pressure on the engine as desired. The ejector thrust may be assisted by a liquid fuel burner in the nozzle or some of the blower air may be byepassed directly to the exhaust manifold. The invention involving the.use of a two-stroke cycle engine is contrasted with that described in Specification 471,177 where the exhaust gases from an ordinary aircraft engine are discharged rearwardly to increase the propulsive effect.
