Abstract

754,141. Jet propulsion plant. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Feb. 10, 1954 [Feb. 25, 1953], No. 3938/54. Class 110(3) In a composite jet propulsion engine comprising a main power plant operating with ambient air, and an auxiliary rocket, the main power plant comprises an air passage bounded by an outer wall and an inner wall, and the rocket is housed within the inner wall and has a rearwardly facing discharge orifice located at a substantial distance upstream of propulsion nozzle of the main power plant, said orifice discharging through said nozzle into the atmosphere. In Fig. 1 the combustion chamber 8 of a rocket is mounted within the exhaust cone 7 of a jet turbine engine and discharges co-axially into the jet pipe 6 which may function as an afterburning chamber and which ends in a propulsion nozzle, the effective area of the latter being controlled by a pair of conical flaps 10 pivoted at 11 and interconnected by gear segments 12, the flaps being operated by a servo-motor 13 mounted on the engine casing. The rocket is supplied with liquid fuel and liquid comburent from pumps 14, 15 which are driven from the engine shaft and which are connected by pipes 17 to the chamber 8. In a modification, Fig. 3, the main power plant is a ram jet, and the chamber 8 is mounted in a streamlned body 23 situated at the intake end of the jet, the rocket discharging co-axially through the exhaust propulsion nozzle 22.
