Abstract

572,684. Lifting-jacks. LAWTON, F. Nov. 2, 1943, No. 18086. [Class 78 (iii)] In jacks of the type in which an electric motor drives gearing for raising the threaded spindle, the rotor of the motor is mounted on a hollow spindle mounted in the base frame, the stator is fixed to the base frame and the threaded spindle is housed in the hollow spindle. The rotor 5 of an electric motor is rotatably mounted on a tube 4 which is supported by the top plate 2 and bottom 3 of a casing 1. The tubular spindle 7 of the motor carries a gear 8 which drives a coaxial gear 11 through gears 9, 10 mounted on a shaft 12. The gear 11 has a central threaded bore which engages a screwed spindle 14 carrying a loadengaging member 15. The spindle 14 is housed in the tube 4 and is formed with a groove for engaging a key on the casing. The upward movement of the spindle may be limited by opening a switch in the motor circuit at a predetermined point. This switch 19, Fig. 2, is actuated by a rod 16 disposed in a recess 16a in the spindle 14 and having a head 17 which is engaged by projections 18 on the spindle at the desired extension. In a modification the end of the spindle may be arranged to raise the gear 11 and thereby cause slipping of a clutch through which the drive from the gear 9 is transmitted.
