Abstract

572, 5 64. Calculating - apparatus. WOOD, J. M.-D. June 15, 1938, No. 17775. [Class 106 (i)] Apparatus for directing the fire of a gun battery on a common target comprises a device on which the relative gun positions can be plotted and adjusted in accordance with the direction of the target from the control position and means arranged to be set according to the range of the target and to indicate the direction and range for the various gun positions. The apparatus as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a casing 1 with a hinged transparent lid 2 and hinged base 3 held in the closed position by a slotted retaining knob or wheel 6. A slidably mounted plate 9, supported on strips 8, is formed with a circular aperture in which is rotatably mounted an annular member 10 with a degree scale and a transparent or translucent sheet of material held in position by a spring ring 11. The scale cooperates with a zero mark 12. Mounted on spools 14, 15, beneath the plate 9, is a chart 13 formed in two sections ; one section is marked with a setting scale 18 consisting of radiating lines and concentric circles representing angles and distances and the other section with a scale 19, Fig. 4, with radiating direction lines and arcs presenting range of targets. The casing is provided with spring clips to carry a marking pencil, spare pencils, a spool for holding spare charts, and a supply of translucent discs.
