[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An instrument for indicating angular position comprises a permanent magnet C pivoted at the centre of a continuous ring E of magnetisable material in which poles are induced by means of upper and lower coils A, B, Fig. 1, mounted on cores G having extending polepieces attached to or in close association with the ring E at four equally-spaced points. The coils are connected to the ends and the slider of a potentiometer D in the manner shown. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4, four coils 1 ... 4 are mounted on a cruciform core G, the pairs of coils on opposite limbs being in series and connected to four equallyspaced points of a circular potentiometer D, Fig. 5, having a pair of diametrically-arranged sliders. A three-limbed core may also be used. In order to damp the movement of the magnet a copper ring may be inserted within the ring E. The conditions for maximum sensitivity are discussed.
