Abstract
572,096. Windmill &c. pumps. CROFTON, W. B. March 29, 1944, No. 5802. [Class 102 (i)] In a windmill-driven vertical lift or like reciprocating pump, a combined trip and inertiamass mechanism is provided to determine automatically at the end of each idle stroke of the windmill rod or pitman, whether a power stroke will be transmitted to the pump rod or plunger equal to or different from the constant stroke of the pitman, according to the power available. In the form shown, the pump rod 10 passes through a bracket 8 resting on the top of the rising main 8 and carries a cross-head 11 with guide rods 13 slidable in sleeves 14 on the pitman 4. The cross-head 11 is pivotally connected, preferably adjustably, by links 15, 15a to levers 1, 1a pivoted on the pitman and pivotally connected by links 6, 6a to the bracket 8. The pitman 4 also carries a ramp 17 engaged by a roller 22 on the arm 21 of a pendulum 18 which is carried by a fixed pivot 19 and which is connected to a pusher-bar 23. The latter carries a replaceable sleeve 25a slidable through an apertured bracket 25 on a lever 26 carried by a fixed pivot 27. A rod 31 supported on a compression spring 26a projects upwardly from the lever 26 and engages a latch 34 pivoted on a bracket 32 on the pitman 4. The latter also carries a bracket 35 on which is pivoted a tie-rod 37 with a hole 38 opposite a pin 39 on a cross-piece 40 secured to the guide rods 13, whilst the tie-rod 37 has a lateral extension 41 under the downward .constraint of a spring 42. With normal power available, the roller 22 rides up and down ramp 17, the pin 39 and hole 38 are disengaged, and the pump rod 10 is reciprocated by the lever system at half the stroke of the pitman 4. With an excessive power, the ramp 17 throws the pendulum into the position 18b, the pusher-bar 23 forces the rod 31 to the position 31a where it is held by the latch 34 which release the extension 41, and the spring 42 causes the pin 39 to enter the hole 38. The pump rod 10 is therefore reciprocated in unison with the pitman 4. The lever system may be replaced by a rack-and-pinion or chain-andpulley drive, and the pendulum by an inertia wheel.
