Abstract

572,020. Uniting metal to glass by heat. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT. W. J., Oct. 18. 1943, No. 17066. [Class 36] [Also in Groups X and XXIII] A window for an inspection aperture consists of a metal member 4 in which is hermetically secured by fusion a sheet of glass 2 the thermal co-efficients of expansion of the glass and metal being approximately the same from normal to fusion temperatures. The member 4 may be recessed or tapered for reception of the glass and is secured to the body of a tank &c. by screwing or welding. The glass may be given a lens or other shape by pressing 'with a die: and may be polished or ground after mounting. Fig. 8 shows a resilient frame of channel section having an attachment flange 10. The member 4 may be electroplated with cobalt or copper &c. or enamelled and if copper coated may be borated to assist adhesion of the glass. A suitable glass for use with iron or steel comprises SiO2,48; ZnO11; BaO,19; CaF2,5; Na2O+K2O+LiO,17 per cent.; for use with an alloy of 54 per cent. Fe 28per cent., Ni 18 per cent. Co or with the alloy described in Specifications 358,934 or 449,807 [both in Group XXIII], the glass may comprise SiO2, 64.1 or 68.5! B2O3, 25.3 or 30; Al2O3, 1.8 or 0.0; Na2O+K2O+LiO, 8.5 or 1.5 per cent. The Provisional Specification also refers to a glass comprising SiO2,45; BaO,15; ZnQ,15 CaF2,5; K2O,14; Na2O, 6 per cent. Specification 462,600, [Group XL], also is referred to.
