Abstract

571,691. Sliding-clasp fasteners. WINTERHALTER, M. March 11, 1943, Nos. 3966, 3967, 3968 and 3969. Convention dates, March 30, 1942, June 18, 1942, Oct. 14, 1942, and Oct. 17, 1942. [Class 44] In a sliding-clasp fastener, the fastening elements 1 have rearward studs or extrusions 4, by which they are fixed directly to the article 5 without the use of string or tapes. The elements may be mounted fixedly on a carrier thread or tape 9 of metal or a thermoplastic, and if the elements are of thermoplastic material, they may be formed integral with carrier 9. As shown, the elements are secured to the article 5 by sewing. One or more bulges 11 on studs 4 prevent detachment of the elements from the stitches 10, or the studs may be recessed, undulated, or zig-zagged for the same purpose. The studs may be of triangular crosssection to give a lead to the needle in the sewing operation. In another form, the extrusions 4 may have prongs, hooks &c. which are pushed through article 5 and then bent or riveted &c. to prevent detachment. Other forms are described in which pointed studs are pushed through the article and withdrawal is prevented by barbs or shoulders on the studs, or by thread &c. strung through apertures near the points. In other forms, the studs are bifurcated with various arrangements of internal barbs or prongs to grip the article when the limbs of the studs are pressed together. The Specification also describes numerous alternative arrangements of two or more of which may be provided, suitable spaced apart, along the heads of the elements, or their studs, or both. The carrier may be secured in various ways, such as by clamping in apertures or open-ended slots provided in the elements, or the carrier may have apertures in which the elements are secured. The elements are formed to present a shoulder between head and stud to abut against the edge of the article and provide for engagement by the usual slider.
