[Class 44] The fastenings comprise elements connected to a carrier made of metallic or non-metallic rigid material rendered flexible owing to its shape or cross-sectional area, and they are attached directly to the article to be fastened, the usual intermediate tapes being dispensed with. Numerous examples of fastening elements and means to secure the elements to the carriers, and the carriers to the article to be fastened, are described and illustrated in the Specification. Metal or thermoplastic materials, such as polymerised amides, may be used in the constructions. Fig. 1 shows fastening elements 1 and zig-zag shaped carriers 3, and a slider 4 of known type. The elements may be integral with the carrier, or, as shown in Fig. 2, may be built up of fastener members 6, preferably made of thermoplastic material cast or pressed upon extensions 9 of the carrier so that the material penetrates through the holes 10. The carriers may have enlarged ends or contain holes, so that they can be secured by stitching, and may be connected together by a wire or thread of a suitable material. Slots may be made in the carriers to increase flexibility. The fastening elements may be secured by bent-over studs, or bifurcations clamped around the carriers. Fig. 15 shows elements 38 cast or pressed upon the opposite points of zig-zag wire 37. The lower elements are then placed in between the pairs of upper elements, the wire being folded about the line of symmetry. Carriers may be formed in lengths secured together at the ends. Fig. 71 shows another construction in which the elements 104 are movably engaged on the flexible carrier 132. so that they can rock relatively to the carrier in the plane of the stringer. Spacing members 133 have points which engage recesses in the elements. The fastener may be covered 'by edges of the article being fastened. Adhesives may be used to secure parts together.
