571,598. Repairing vulcanisable and plastic articles. BRITISH TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BIRKBECK, J. June 4, 1943, No. 9016. [Class 70] An apparatus for effecting localized heat and pressure operations on vulcanizable or plastic articles comprises in combination a pressure plate of magnetizable material to be applied on one side of the article and a permanent or electromagnet applied to the other side so as magnetically to provide the necessary pressure, together with associated heating means. In an example, applied to the permanent repair of a self-sealing flexible fuel cell 10, Fig. 1, as used on aircraft, consisting of plies of synthetic rubber 11, rubber 13, and impregnated textile 14, the cell is supported with the puncture hole, filled with vulcanizable material 22, centrally over the electromagnet 21 ; the 'repair patch 18 and ring 16, Fig. 2, are then positioned and the magnetic base-plate 19 of an electrical heater 20 placed in the ring. The patch and filling are then vulcanized in position under the requisite conditions of heat and pressure. The electromagnet 21 may be placed inside the fuel cell and the heater 20 applied to the outside. The Provisional Specification describes also a similar process in which heat is not employed.
