Abstract

932,953. Tyre cover repair patch. O. GRUBER, and W. GRUBER, [trading as STAHLGRUBER O. GRUBER & CO.]. Nov. 16, 1959 [Nov. 14, 1958; Feb. 17, 1959; Aug. 27, 1959], No. 38813/59. Class 144 (1). A tyre cover repair patch or plaster comprises layers 5 of rubberized woven fabric superimposed in angular relation so that ends 6 of each layer project rosette-like in angularly spaced relation from a central portion of the patch where all the layers overlap, the layers each being of a thickness of 0.3 to 0.8 mm. and having rounded ends 6, the warp and weft of the fabric of each layer having equal tensile strengths, and the assembly being embedded in rubber. The layers may comprise synthetic fibres which have been prestretched under heat and thermoset at a temperature of 150‹ to 180‹ C. The layer structure is completely embedded in either unvulcanized or vulcanized rubber 3 according to whether the patch is to be hot or cold vulcanized to the repair, and for cold vulcanization an adhesive layer 8 projects beyond the periphery 9 of the embedding rubber 3. The layers 5 may be rectangular as shown, or triangular in shape with or without one of the corners thereof rounded off to provide respectively a polygonal or circular centre portion. For greater strength each single layer insert of a patch may be replaced by a two-layer insert, the overlying layer being of smaller dimensions than the underlying layer as shown in Fig. 3. For repairing tyre covers externally immediately prior to retreading, a patch such as shown in Fig. 6 is used, the patch shown comprising a cushioning layer of unvulcanized rubber 21 of 0.6 to 1.2 mm. thickness surmounted by two thin woven fabric cross-laid layers 23a, 23b each of about 0.5 mm. thickness. Alternatively, the fabric layers may be sandwiched between two cushioning layers, each of about 0.4 to 0.6 mm. thickness, and more than two fabric layers may be used, the layers being superimposed in angular relation as in Fig. 1.
