Abstract
571,394. Reamers. HARDY, SPICER, & CO., Ltd., and PREW, T. B. Jan. 17, 1944, No. 842. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A reamer, whilst the cutting portion is of less than the required diameter, has high-speed steel alloy 22 deposited thereon, as by arc welding, to make it oversize and is then machined to form the cutting edges. The reamer may be non-expansibte, or may have its body 11 separated by longitudinal slits 13 into four fingers 12, each carrying two-cutting edges, and expanded by a tapered-plug 18 screwing on a bolt 15 pinned at 16 to the body. The alloy deposits 22 may be applied to a uniform or varying depth for parallel reamers and the operative surfaces are ground to the required diameter. Re-working worn articles.-For renovating worn reamers the alloy is deposited on the leading end which has been reduced by wear and then re-ground without requiring expansion.
