Abstract

644,145. Percussive drills. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL., and LARCEN, J. A. Dec. 9, 1947, No. 32506. [Class 124] A drill bit has one or more hard metal cutting inserts, permanently secured in the cutting end, which are provided with gauge producing portions at their outer radial end surfaces extending to a point between the cutting edge and half the axial height of the insert to form the maximum diameter of the bit. As shown the insert 1 may have projections 3 having curved portions 8 joining them to the base of the insert. The projections may extend along less than one third of the axial height of the insert and may have a contour similar to the normal shape of the cone formed by wear, Fig. 3 (not shown). The ratio of breadth to height of the insert may be as in Specification 643,179.
