Abstract

571,131. Tool-holders. WILSON, J. E. Jan. 12, 1944, No. 572. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] In a tool-holder of the kind comprising a hollow sleeve or body 1 with a bore which is conical or has inclined surfaces 2, and contractible tool-gripping jaws 4 integrally connected at their inner ends and mounted on a rod 5 by means of which the jaws are drawn inwardly of the sleeve to contract the jaws, the jaws are formed with longitudinal grooves 6 in the inner faces in which the shank of the tool is gripped, the shank extending longitudinally into the body 1. The jaws may be made by turning a piece of metal to shape, slitting it longitudinally, cutting the grooves 6 and then welding together the small ends of the two jaw pieces and the end of the rod 5 which is engaged in the grooves 6 before welding. Alternatively, the rod may be screwed into a collar welded to the inner ends of the two jaw pieces.
