570,567. Moulded hats for miners &c. DEHN, F. B. (Mine Safety Appliances Co.). May 8, 1942, No. 6244. [Class 63] [Also in Group VIII] A moulded electrically non-conducting headgear for miners, mill workers, &c. of thermoplastic or thermosetting material having a reinforcing layer of woven. glass material embedded between the inner and outer surfaces of the headgear is characterized in that the strands of the woven glass material are of such a thinness in comparison with the body of plastic material that they are deformed by the moulding pressure, the deformation being effected at the points of intersection of the strands of glass, and the plastic material penetrating through the mesh of the woven glass material. Fig. 7 shows a moulded fabric in which the strands of a glass fabric 12 are flattened at their points of intersection, two layers of textile fabric 10, 11 being spaced from the glass fabric by plastic material 13 in which the three fabrics are embedded. The layers 10, 11 may be omitted. Fig. 1 shows a helmet of phenolic resin or cellulose derivative having the crown thus reinforced ; the whole helmet may be thus reinforced. The glass fibres may be lubricated with methyl methacrylate or tricresyl phosphate to avoid cutting of the fibres when woven and used as reinforcement. Specification 542,379 is referred to.
