Abstract
570,441. Electrically heating liquids. WRIGHT, A., and WRIGHT & LLOYD, Ltd. Aug. 6, 1943, No. 12739. [Class 39 (iii)] Liquid is heated by a main resistance element 11 having a low temperature coefficient, e.g. of nickel - chromium alloy, and a control element 12 of higher temperature coefficient, e.g., of iron or nickel, connected in series. If liquid falls to the level 15 and uncovers the element 12, it reaches a higher temperature, and its increase in resistance reduces the current to a point at which the desired evolution of heat is obtained, or, if both elements are uncovered, to a point at which damage is avoided. The two elements may both be near the bottom, as in a kettle, or element 12 may be vertical, so that the current is progressively decreased as it becomes uncovered.
