Abstract
570,228. Jointing by stamping. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and BROCK, W. H. J. Jan. 14, 1944, No. 774. [Class 83 (iv)] In jointing by flattening dished washers, the washer is formed with an annular shoulder 14, Fig. 1, on its abutment surface 13, spaced a substantial distance w from the gripping edge 12, but nearer to that edge than to the deflecting edge 22. The shoulder may be formed by reducing the thickness of the washer around its gripping edge. The edge 12 is preferably reamed, broached or pressed parallel to the axis and a good fit for the spigot part 18 of a part such as a bracket 15 to be secured to a clutch casing 16. The flattening punch 23 is preferably recessed to engage the edge 22 and prevent any spreading of the washer during flattening. This formation of the washer facilitates engagement with the fixing groove 21 and by varying the degree of flattening permits a secure fixing whilst allowing greater tolerance on the dimensions of the parts. For fixing a headed member 27, Fig. 8, in a recess in a plate 29, the shoulder 14 is formed by thinning the outer edge of the washer, the inner edge being then the deflecting edge for contact by the punch.
