Abstract

570,118. Driving arrangements for ships. DEAN, J. D., and CLARKE, J. H. July 26, 1943, No. 12160. Drawings to Specification. [Class 114] In an electric ship propulsion system of the kind wherein a propeller is driven by one or more alternating current motors, preferably of the synchronous type, supplied with current by a plurality of alternators each having its own prime mover, a variable pitch propeller is employed, in order to permit changes in speed of the ship whilst maintaining a substantially constant speed of rotation of the prime movers, which may be turbines, or internal combustion engines. The propeller displacement may thus be varied to suit the number of prime. movers in operation and the constant frequency of the alternators permits their use for running the auxiliary electrically-operated equipment of the ship. Pitch variation of the propeller may be effected by known electrical means, or hydraulically, in which case use is preferably made of the pressure liquid normally provided in connection with hydraulic steering.
