Abstract

570,106. Repairing fractured boiler plates. GOODACRE, F. L., and TURNER, L. E. June 15, 1943, No. 9586. [Class 123 (ii)] [Also in Groups XVII, XXIX and XXXIII] Punctured or cracked metal &c. surfaces accessible from one side only, such as surfaces of boilers &c. are repaired by cutting out the damaged portion to leave an approximately regular aperture larger inone dimension than in that at right angles thereto, and closing the aperture by inner and outer plates larger in area than the aperture, the inner plate being secured to a separable tool by which it is passed through the aperture and held whilst the outer plate is secured to the inner plate, the edges of the aperture being then clamped between the plates by means of bolts passed through the outer plate to engage non-rotatable nuts carried by the inner plate. A nut 14, outer plate 2, washer 15 and inner plate 3 with non-rotatable nuts 8 are threaded on to a tool 11 the end of which is then screwed into the bore of an internally and externally threaded mushroom headed bolt 10 with flats 102 adapted to engage the sides of a slot in the plate 3; the nuts 8 may be welded, &c. to the plate 3, or secured thereto by wires &c., or be movably held to allow centreing movement. The plate 3 is then passed through the aperture 1 in the surface under repair, and the nut 14 is engaged with the outer thread of the bolt 10; bolts are then passed through the plate 2 into engagement with the nuts 8, the bolts either passing through the aperture 1 or through holes surrounding the aperture. Washers of zinc. lead, leather, fibre, &c. may be provided between one or both the plates 2, 3, and the surface under repair.
