Abstract
570,084. Structural materials. SMITH, W. E., and BANKS, J. L. M. S. April 21, 1943, No. 6430. [Class 64 (ii)] [Also in Groups V and X] A honeycomb structure made as described in Specification 551,211 is cut into sheets with the tubes 1 transversely arranged, and the ends of the cavities are then filled by suspending the sheet in a trough 2 containing a viscous filler which then sets in the ends of the cavities so that the sides of the sheet or block present a continuous surface. The filler may be grout, mortar, plaster of paris, expanded rubber, or bituminous material. Alternatively it may be applied with a trowel. One or both sides of the sheet may be so covered, or the ends of the cavities on one face may be closed by any suitable material. In Fig. 3, layers of sheet-like elements 4, 5, 7, 8, formed as described in Specification 551,733 are bonded together to provide closed cavities 6 within the structure and open cavities 9 on at. least one face. The cavities 9 are filled as in Fig. 1. In other forms, the tubes in alternate layers may be at right angles, so that these layers present open cavities and closed surfaces alternately at the face to be filled. The honeycomb structure may be of paper, fabric, or other fibrous material impregnated with synthetic resin, pulp board, compressed fibre, rubber or metal.
