Abstract

569,911. Lineardimension gauges ; indicating apparatus. CHARLES, A., TURNER, A., and SMITH METERS, Ltd. Dec. 17, 1942, No. 17952. [Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] The measuring member 1 of a lineardimension gauge is urged by a spring 11 towards' its outer position with respect to the casing 4 and bears against a threearmed pointer-operating lever 31, 32, 22 pivoted at 29 to move this lever against the action of its spring 35. When the measuring member 1 is moved inwards, the operating lever 31, 32, 22 is caused to follow the member, and to operate the pointer, by the action of the spring 35, the tension in which is thus reduced. Sudden inward movement of the member 1 thus has no harmful effect on the pointer mechanism. The movement of the member 1 is limited by the engagement of a projection 7 on the member with fixed studs 5, rotation of the member being prevented by a strip 10 carried by the studs 5. An adjusting stud 21 projects into a slot in the member 1 to engage the arm 31 of the operating lever 31, 32, 22. The lower arm 22 of this lever has a slotted engagement with a pin 38 fixed to a crank arm 39 pivoted at 40 and having a second pin 42 adjustably secured to a pointer 23 also pivoted at 40. The pointer scale 44 has tolerance indicators 47 adjustable in a slot 46. As the member 1 moves towards the inner limit of its travel and the pointer 23 reaches the end of the scale, further movement of the pointer is prevented by engagement of the operating lever 22 with a fixed stud 64, the stud 20 in the spindle 1 then passing out of contact with the arm 31 of the operating lever. A hand lever 16 carries a pin 13 to engage the projection 7 to lift the member 1 when a workpiece is to be inserted beneath the gauge. In a modification, the operating lever 31, 32, 22 is engaged by a projection on the member 1 instead of being contacted by the stud 21. The magnification ratio between the movement of the member 1 and pointer 23 may be varied by varying the point of contact between the operating lever arm 31, Fig. 6, and the end of the stud 21 in the member 1. This is effected by moving laterally a ball 60 carried by a spring 54 fixed to the strip 10, the strip being pivoted on its upper stud 5 and engaging its lower stud 5 by means of a slotted hole, the strip being pivotally adjusted about the upper stud 5 by an eccentric screw 63 to vary the position of the ball 60.
