Abstract

569,780. Forging. MELDRUM, T., and JENNINGS, G. Jan. 31, 1944, No. 18552. [Class 83 (iv)] Bars are upset between an adjustably fixed abutment and a power traversed abutment, a gas burner providing local heating at the part to be upset. Anvils recessed at 43 to receive the ends of the bar are provided in an adjustably fixed abutment 14 and in an abutment 15 traversed on the bed 13 by a nut 16 and screw 17. An adjustably fixed intermediate support 40 has a hinged upper portion secured by a catch 47 to enable a split die to be inserted and clamped to support the bar adjacent the upset. The screw 17 is rotatable by a pilot wheel 23 and bevel gearing 20 for return and setting movement and by worm gearing 25 belt driven at 38 from an electric motor and reduction gearing to effect slow movement for the upsetting stroke. The worm has a drop-box mounting to provide for disconnection during hand setting and for an automatic stop for the power stroke. The worm shaft is in two parts connected by a universal joint 36 and the movable end is supported by a spherical bearing 28a in a housing 29 traversable in guides 34 as controlled by a rod 30 pivoted to a hand lever 31. A spring 35 returns the worm 26 to disengaged position unless prevented by introducing a pivoted catch 58 under the lever 31 by a handle 60. A striker 65 on a dog rod 62 adjustably connected to the movable abutment 15 is set to trip the catch and release the worm after the required amount of upset. A horseshoeshaped burner 49 applies radial jets to the bar, is adjustably supported at 57 and has separate gas and oxygen supplies controlled by independent valves. For longer bars an abutment 67 is carried by an extension of the bed supported by a bracket 12, is adjustably located by a screw and hand wheel 69, and is clamped at 71. The anvil in the abutment 14 is replaced by a die to act as a second intermediate support, and the burner may be transferred to be supported by the abutment 67.
