Abstract
784,981. Angular bending. EDWARDS, Ltd., F. J., and HAYWARD, G. M. May 17, 1956, No. 15452/56. Class 83 (4). A sheet metal working press in which a pair of members carrying co-operating dies are movable upon guides towards and away from one another to fold and bend sheet metal disposed therebetween is characterized in that one of said members may be disengaged from one of said guides and moved relatively to the other member to allow work to be removed from the press. From the ends of the lower beam 2 of the press cylindrical guide members 1 extend upwardly and carry the upper beam 4. The upper and lower beams carry dies 5 and 3 respectively. The press is operated by an electric motor 6 driving a flywheel 11 on a shaft 12 connected to a double-acting clutch and brake 15 operated by a treadle bar 17. The shaft 18 from the clutch unit enters a reduction unit 19 which drives eccentrics 26 by means of which the top beam is reciprocated. The guide members comprise rigid sleeves 27 in which tubular members 28 screw-threadably connected to shafts 32 are reciprocable, the shafts 32 being connected through seatings 33 to the eccentrics 26. The shafts 32 are rotatable by a handle 35 and worm and pinion gearing 37, 38 to adjust the effective length of the shaft 32 and tubular member 28 to allow for the insertion of different sized dies. The upper beam is pivotally mounted at one end on the guide by means of a double thrust bearing 39 and the other end of the beam is disengageably coupled to the other guide by a semi-cylindrical member 44 engaging about the tubular member 28 and secured by a latch 51, e.g. a spring-loaded detent. For removing deep trays and open-topped boxes from the press after their formation the top beam is unlatched and swung horizontally about its pivot and the pressing removed.
