Abstract
569,142. Moulding - machines. McCARTHY, J. June 23, 1943, No. 10150. [Class 83 (i)] In a moulding-machine, pneumatic jarring and pressing cylinders 5, 6 are supported by liquid o which receives the reaction thereof and is then discharged to draw the pattern from the mould without much vertical movement of the mould. The pattern-plate is fixed to a table 1 and a flask is placed thereon and charged. Air is then supplied, by passages 13, 14, 14a, 14b, 14c to the space 15a below the jar plunger 4 so that this raises the table 1 until the passage 14 is closed and the space 15a opened to exhaust 15, when the table falls and the operation is repeated as long as required. More sand is then added to the flask, a board is placed thereon, a head 2 is swung into position over the flask and air is admitted to the cylinder 6 by a passage (not shown), in communication with a passage 12. This causes the cylinder 5, now acting as a plunger, to lift the table 1 and compress the sand against the head 2. After the return of the cylinder 5 &c. to the position shown, a valve 8 is opened to allow the liquid, e.g. oil, to flow into a space 9 and the cylinder 6, now acting as a plunger, to fall with the table 1 and pattern-plate, the mould being supported, and thus drawn, by adjustable pillars 23. After the mould has been removed, the cylinder 6 &c. are raised to the position shown by admitting compressed air at 10 and closing the valve 8. In modifications, the sand is pressed successively against heads 21, 2<2>, Fig. 8, carried by a rotatable member A or by two arms, like the arm 3<3>, Fig. 1. The table 1 may have a pneumatic vibrator embedded therein for use during drawing.
