[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group II] In a drop hammer, mining stamp, pile driver, &c., the tup is lifted by means of a chain positively engaged with the tup for lifting and disengaged for release. The tup 17, Fig. 1, is guided at its corners by ways 16, Fig. 3, on standards 12, 13, each of which is double with space for an intermediately situated chain 21. A motor 35 on the head 15, supported by and connecting the standards, drives by V-belts a flywheel 33 running by roller bearings on the shaft 28 carrying a pinion driving, through gearing, chain - wheels 22. The fly - wheel drives the shaft through a plate clutch 37 controlled by an annular air-cylinder 39. A similarly constructed brake 41 is controlled by a cylinder 47 and the arrangement is such that when the clutch is engaged the brake is off and conversely. The chains are of triple roller form, the centre rollers running on ways 61 on a separator 55 located between the up and down runs. The outer rollers engage lugs 60 on the tup during lifting, and this engagement is effected by lateral movement of the separators by pistons 58 controlled either manually or by dogs actuated by the tup. Reverse movement of the separators frees the tup for the drop. Instead of moving laterally, the chains may be mounted to swing about the axes of the chain-wheels 22. In modifications, the tup has rollers or lugs to engage lugs on the lifting chain.
