Abstract
568,613. Cam gearing. JOHNSTON, R. H. July 5, 1943, No. 10876. [Class 80 (iii)] Relates to cam gearing of the kind comprising a worm cam fixed on a shaft, e.g. the steering column of a road vehicle, and engaged by a follower in the form of a single pin, carried in a rocker arm, and having a frusto-conical end engaging the cam. According to the invention, the contacting surfaces of the cam 1 and the end 3 of the pin are so inclined that the line of action 8 of the force on the pin, for any setting of the gearing, will pass between the axis of the pin and that point on the bearing surface of the front bearing that is most remote from the said axis on the opposite side thereof to the said contacting surfaces. Preferably, the line of action will pass through the centre of the bearing surface of the front bearing, Figs. 2, 3, or, if such front bearing be of the anti-friction type, through the centre of a ball 9, Fig. 1, or equivalent roller. The object is to avoid a turning moment about the bearing surface of the front bearing which tends to tilt the pin. The thread of the worm can be formed in the manner described in Specification 223,963, [Class 80 (iii)]. Specifications 7909/14 and 253,257, [both in Class 80 (iii)], also are referred to.
