Abstract
568,268. Sealing door edges. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., PETTER, W. E. W., WIDGERY, W. M., RICHARDS, S. T. A., and DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. May 31, 1943, No. 8685. [Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVI] An inflatable gasket for sealing door edges &c. in pressure cabins of high altitude aircraft or other uses consists of a backing strip 1 of flexible jointing material preferably tapered and a strip of rubber &c. 3 hermetically joined thereto at its edges to form a flat inflatable member which lies nearly in one plane with the flexible backing when deflated. The inflatable member may be a flattened tube housed in a, recess in the backing covered over with a flexible strip, Fig. 2, or may be formed of a folded strip united integrally at its edges or may be a flattened tube housed in a folded strip united together or to an intermediate strip at its edges. A protecting plate may be provided instead of the flexible backing. The gasket may be inflated by an engine-driven blower having a pressure control in the delivery pipe or by other means such as a bicycle pump and a deflating valve may be provided operated from the door handle or by independent hand lever. The gasket may be secured to the fuselage and adapted to engage a member 6 on the sliding cover of the cockpit.
