Abstract

568,090. Moulding hollow articles from thermoplastic material. DIXON PLASTICS, Ltd., and TONSLEY, F. H. March 17, 1941, No. 3667. [Class 87 (ii)] A preformed tube 25 is placed in a two-part mould 10, one end of the tube being clamped between a bung 11 and the mould halves, and the other end being flattened, around a conduit 12, in a rectangular orifice formed in the ends of the mould halves. Preferably the tube is softened before it is put into the mould. The mould is then heated (or it may be heated before the tube is inserted) as by plunging it into a bath of hot liquid or by means of jackets around the mould. Then heated liquid is passed through the tube from a cock 16, non-return valve 15 and conduit 13 in the bung ; the liquid leaves the tube through conduit 12 and cock 21. When the temperature-indicator 23 shows that the temperature of the issuing liquid is the same as that in the thermostatically-controlled tank which feeds the cock 16, the flow is stopped by closing cock 21. The cock 16 is then closed, and a cock 17 (which is connected with cock 16) is opened, whereupon compressed air passes through valve 18 and conduit 14 in the bung and subjects the liquid in the tube to pressure, thus expanding the tube into contact with the mould. Then the mould is cooled, as by immersion in a cold bath or by mould jackets, cock 21 is (a) opened so that the compressed air blows the liquid from the tube, (b) closed to build up air pressure in the tube, (c) opened, and the moulded article is removed. The cooling of the mould may take place after the air pressure has been built up in the tube. The moulded article may be a hosiery display form. The thermoplastic material may be cellulose acetate, the heating liquid being water, or celluloid, the heating liquid being oil. Specification 569,093 is referred to.
