[Class 87 (i)] [Also in Group V] First a layer of concrete, mortar, plaster, &c. is cast, then a layer of sand, ashes, soil, &c., then another layer of concrete &c. and finally ties are inserted &c. The sand &c. may be allowed to fall away after the concrete has set, or may be retained in the block. Fig. 1 shows a block which has been cast on a pallet 3 in a mould face downwards, the cast materials being sand 4, stones 5 (for ornament), dense waterproof concrete 6, weaker concrete 7, sand 8 and concrete 9 of a pervious nature giving good heat and sound insulation. The ties 10, of twisted square steel bars, are driven through holes 11, 12 filled with cement grout or mortar grout and through the layers 9, 8, 7. Fig. 2 illustrates a continuous method in which a conveyer belt 40 carries abutting pallets 19 on which first a thin layer 20 of impervious concrete is laid and then successively, from hoppers 25, 29 and 31, semi-porous concrete 21, sand 22 and concrete 41. Tampers 24, 26, 30, 32 and 38 consolidate the layers. Rotating stirrers 281, fixed to tubes 27, 23, make pockets of loose material in the concrete layers, and into these pockets grout is fed from the tubes. A steel plate 35 is driven in to divide the material into lengths corresponding to the lengths of the pallets, and a plunger 36 drives in ties 37. Timber or other fixing battens may be secured to the concrete by placing them on the latter and driving the ties through them. Specifications 148,595, [Class 87 (i)], and 374,533 are referred to.
