Abstract
567,604. Packing rifles. STEVENS, A. H. (Manson, F. G.). Sept. 28, 1943, No. 15909. [Class 94 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An aerial delivery apparatus which is especially applicable for delivering a package of rifles from aircraft is constructed of a large blanket 18 of cotton duck to which is attached a smaller blanket 22 of felt, upon which are placed a number of rifles 26 which are rolled into a bundle 10 after turning in the side flaps 24. The bundle 10 is then connected to the bomb rack 100 of an aircraft by means of loops 40 attached to end drums 12, 14 which are placed over the bundle 10. The loops form part of strengthening straps 33, 38 secured to the drums 12, 14, and other straps 46 are connected by divided parts 48 to circumferential bands 32, 34, and a third divided part 52 is connected to a part of a coupling 56 by means of which, and a long loop 58 attached to the opposite circumferential band, the drums are held in place in a manner which can be readily detached. A second similar connection is provided on the side of the roll 10 (not shown) in Fig. 1. The drum 14 is connected to a parachute pack 16 in which is contained a parachute connected by risers 86 and hooks 88 to buckles 50 secured to the straps 34. The pack 16 is secured to the end drum by means of ties 66 passed through loops 64 and tied at 68, and the case 70 is secured by tacking 94 to the static line 92 attached to the aircraft, so that when the bomb rack is released the tacking is broken and the case withdrawn to permit unfolding of the parachute, and the rip cord 78 is similarly released.
