Abstract
175,308. Democratis, S. J., and Democratis, B. J., (Democratis J.). Aug. 9, 1920. Parachutes.-Relates to parachutes which are packed according to the system described in Specification 172,670 and are released from their containers on aircraft in a packed condition. Packing is performed by first folding the parachute material A, as shown for example at Fig. 1 (i). and then rolling it towards and around a structure B at the centre of the parachute, Figs. 1 (2) and 1 (3). When the pull of the load comes upon the rigging tapes L, after the parachute has been launched, the packed fabric moves away from the structure B and at the same time the peripheral portion of the fabric unpacks on the outer circumference of the pack. Several methods of folding the material before rolling it are described, one such method being indicated in Fig. 6 (1). The upper layer of folded fabric may be first rolled outwardly towards the circumference and the whole re-rolled towards the centre. There may be two or more circumferential rolls, Fig. 10 (3), upon which the pull of the load is exerted successively. To facilitate the opening of the parachute, the central aperture may be covered by a cloth H, Fig. 13, which is folded or rolled up with the parachute fabric A. The cloth may be loose and may carry the central structure B; or it may be attached to the main parachute so as to act as a pilot parachute. The rigging L may be packed in loops R, Fig. 20, which are secured on the parachute fabric A and may be connected by a tape S.
