Abstract

567,101. Electric resistances. POOLE, R. Feb. 26, 1943, No. 3210. [Class 37] [Also in Group III] In apparatus for detecting explosive gases, of the kind comprising an electrically heated filament and a compensating filament operating at a lower temperature, the filaments being connected in a Wheatstone bridge circuit and both situated in a current of the gas to be tested, the two filaments are carried on a single replaceable mount inserted in the chamber traversed by the gas. Preferably, the mount comprises a cylindrical plug 23 fitted centrally in the chamber 21 so as to leave an annular gas space which ia constricted by two projecting flanges 23a, 23b on the plug. Between the flanges the plug is cut away to form two semicylindrical chambers, separated by a partition 27 and surrounded by a perforated sleeve 28. The filaments 25a, 26a are situated in these chambers and connected to terminals 25, 26 on the end of the plug. The filaments are matched so that when the unit is replaced the calibration of the instrument is unchanged. The filaments are connected in known manner in a Wheatstone bridge with a battery, measuring instrument, and two-way switch, whereby the latter can be used to test the battery. The instruments may be mounted on a board with hinged lid attached to a belt and brace harness worn by the operator, the battery being carried at the back of the belt.'
