Abstract

905,626. Determining qualities of materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 22, 1959 [Oct. 27, 1958], No. 34396/58. Class 37. In a method of testing quantitatively for the presence of an adulterant gas in an inert gas, the mixture is passed into a glow discharge tube 1 having electrodes 2 set to form a gap of constant width to which an alternating voltage is applied from a constant potential source so as to maintain a glow discharge. The percentage of adulterant is determined by measuring the current through the gas, to which it is related (Fig. 1, not shown). The constant voltage, is derived from a saturated core constant voltage transformer 8 shunted by capacitor 9, via a step-up transformer 6. The current is measured by an ammeter 10 inductively coupled to the primary circuit 7, whose circuit includes terminals 11 connected to an alarm system, e.g. a flashing light or a bell.
