536,059. Gas analysis. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Oct. 26, 1939, No. 28740. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1938. [Class 1 (i)] In apparatus for testing for combustible gases, of the type wherein the gas is burned on an electrically heated filament arranged in a Wheatstone bridge or like circuit, a resistance is provided in the circuit whereby a predetermined change in the temperature of the filament may be made thus adapting it for the estimation of gases with different ignition points. In Fig. 1 the Wheatstone bridge comprises the testing filament 16, compensating filament 14 and resistances 10, 12, and is supplied with current from battery 28 through adjustable resistance 32 which compensates for variations of battery voltage. Resistance 36 reduces the filament voltage to that appropriate to the lower ignition point ; it can be short-circuited by switch 38. Resistance 26 in parallel with the galvanometer serves to calibrate the instrument to give direct readings of gas percentages. In a modification (not shown) two such resistances are provided which may be alternatively used so that the same calibration serves for both filament temperatures. The galvonometer may be switched over into the dotted position for the purpose of testing or adjusting the battery voltage. Specification 522,942 is referred to.
